Covid Cards: Clear, Dynamic, Shareable COVID Data at a Glance

Background

After using a variety of COVID-related dashboards and data sources, we saw that was not an easy and clear source of information. The data engine we developed and used for our product, Readable Report, would lend itself to aggregating and displaying this type of data and could so in an easily understood way.

We used the research we gained from exploring each current option and developed a better understanding of what metrics could be presented and shared.

Covid Cards allowed users to generate a dynamic and shareable image detailing key county-based COVID metrics.

Challenge

Rapidly developing an end-to-end system that would allow users to easily share clearly designed and easily understood COVID metrics.

The most challenging portion for me was getting a vectored SVG template to dynamically update based on shifting data and look good no matter what numbers were presented.

Research

We interviewed people that stated they were looking for ways to share distilled COVID information to understand their pain points. We visited the current COVID dashboards and resources to see where improvements could be made while addressing the feedback gained via the interviews.

Design Goals

Developing a COVID resource that allows users to search and share metrics in a clean and easy-to-use interface.

Process

PRODUCT BRAINSTORMING

I sketched out the search process and how to display data and the associated metrics, as well as simplifying the visuals and design.

In addition, I ran a card sorting session to determine functionalities that should be included, relocated, or eliminated. This exercise was helpful to narrow down specific features for launch.

WIREFRAMES & CARD EVOLUTION

These are the sketches that began the visualization process for the reports and associated dashboard functionality.

FINAL DESIGN

The final frontend and design was built in VueJS and Tailwind. The focus remained on a simple search bar with an associated result page allowing for date selection and sharing options.

REVIEW

The underlying technology of Covid Cards is pretty amazing and I'm very glad I got to work on it.

The idea of a vectored SVG template that updates dynamically based on changing data and loads nearly instantly is extremely exciting.
